The LAST post on old Pharyngula

Pharyngula is dead. Long live Pharyngula!

I've made the move to scienceblogs.com, joining a whole bunch of other science bloggers in a vast new media conglomeration that will put this site on a better, faster server. No more sluggish performance. No more "cannot connect to database" messages. Just pages flying out at you with no hesitation. Well, I hope, at least.

There's just one more brief moment of pain: all you regular readers of Pharyngula are going to have to update your bookmarks and newsreaders, I'm afraid. All the old links to this site will still work, so that will require no changes, but all the new content will be posted exclusively over there. Sorry about that. In a few weeks I'll patch the main page here to do an automatic redirect, but for now you ought to change things around on your end, and get used to going to a new URL (it's all going to be so much better, I promise.)

Here's the vital info:

New Address: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/

New Feed: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/index.xml

See you all at the new place!

  1. It's not as much fun to say "scienceblogs" as it is to shout "Pharyngula! Pharyngula! Pharyngula!"-- an incantation known to drive creationists into first-day darkness.

  2. There is no pirate mode over there!!!!

    <sobs>

    We'll miss ya...

  3. Oh Nooooooo!!

Don't get me wrong, Dr.Myers, I think it is great if you are moving on to bigger things. It is just that I am not a big fan of group blogs.

On the other hand, I realize you've been almost superhumanly prolific, and your readers can't demand that of you indefinitely.

Albeit a mostly silent reader all this while, I will miss this little niche and the quality of comments here. I feel that however good the new place, it will not be the same.

    Good luck Dr.Myers.

  4. looks good!
if there's a redirect though, will we still be able to search through the archives of your old posts?
#: Posted by  on  01/12  at  12:37 PM
  5. Yes, archives will still be available.

Oh, and it is not a group blog. It's still just me alone on my site -- it's just being hosted by Seed Media, which also hosts a lot of other science blogs.

And Pirate Mode WILL return! It's just low priority relative to getting the important functionality in place.

  6. its much faster over there, not bad.. but work on customization. Pharyngula had its own good look to it, and the other blogs look pretty much the same.

    Very cool though

  8. But I don't like the way the new blog looks! Couldn't you have just gotten a beter server with better bandwidth? What if they go back on letting you be yourself? I'd hate for your causticness to be censored.

    *pouts*

Well, if you think it's the right decision for you, I can't fault you for that.

  9. I hope the anti-blog software here at work does't pick up on this. Pharyngula is one of the few blogs that have been making it through unscathed. Not sure I could justify getting special access rights since I doubt I could draw a clear link between, say evo-devo and government procurement.

  10. *Sniff* it's so sad to see the old site go away. What's Darwin gonna be up to now?

  11. That settles it. I'm not a conservative, because this change doesn't disturb me in the least.

    Bookmarked and posted on.

Change brings opportunity ... to squeak out another blog post, anyway.

  12. Sniff. Tremble. Stutter.

    Weep! Wail! Moan! Scream!

    Sigh. Regret. Accept.

-- Okay, I'm mostly over it now. Still, I'm going to miss this place...
    Sniff. Tremble... (repeat as needed)

  15. <geek>
Why not change this with DNS? Why do you need a new URL?
    </geek>
#: Posted by  on  01/12  at  05:22 PM
  16. If I change it with DNS, all the old links to the archive die a horrible death. It's different software on the new server.

  17. I'll never leave this place! Never!

  18. The new site looks.. crappy.

    *sigh*

Functionality can look good, really, it can.

  19. shout "Pharyngula! Pharyngula! Pharyngula!"

I often found myself singing "pharyngula... pharyngulayyy... pharyngulaaa... pharyngu-la ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hay... " etc.

  20. I'm not sure I like this idea. What kind of control will Seed Media want over your content? If they or another blogger they host do something you disapprove of and you talk about it on your blog, will there be consequences? To what extent can your putting your blog there be seen as an endorsement of Seed Media, and how much do you know about their policies that you're willing to endorse them, at least implicitly?

Maybe I've been with politically active, not-for-profit orgs too long, but my experience is that one must be *very* careful who one allows one's name to be associated with publicly. How sure are you that this is something you want to be associated with?

Plus, the template there sucks. But that's something you can change, I'm sure.

  21. As usual, something worldshattering is going on here, ... well, there ... well, you know!

So if Pharyngula developed further is should be Hatching now? (I threw in PZ fancy for zebrafish in the assumptions.)

  22. God told me this isn't going to happen.

  23. Just a thought - how long before some creationist declares "victory" and claims pharyngula is dead, PZ gave up, starts calling the site "defunct," etc?

  24. I'm not really a die-hard pharyngula-visitor (but I do enjoy coming here at least a few times per week), so I'm not sure I have the right to complain, but... yuck. Why trade a nice clean design for bloat? And I got the impression that the site is on your own server right now, why on earth would you want to hand over the technical administration to someone else?

I'm really sorry to hear this, and I seriously doubt I'll be visiting the "new" site very often (mainly because of the bloat).
#: Posted by  on  01/13  at  05:57 AM
  25. Nobody else having trouble getting in there, then?

Sigh. Starting to accept that it really is time I upgraded.
#: Posted by  on  01/13  at  06:45 AM
  26. I hope you at least make http://www.pharyngula.org a permanent redirect. Better branding and all.
#: Posted by Heliologue  on  01/13  at  09:23 AM
  27. If you do a automatic redirect, how will we look through archives?

  28. It is beyond me why the evolutionists are so afraid to look at the evidence. When one the a study of the scientific laws and the application of these laws, evolution does not make any logical sense. The students of this country are forced to learn about the religion of evolution thier entire school careers by the priests of the evolution movement.
I tell you the truth; when one is confronted with the existance of the Living God,there comes the knowing how one should live and the stark reality of failure.
Evolution is not about science but about a rationalization of immorral living. So that one is only left with the denial of the Living God who created them. So that the life style may continue rather than accepting responsibility for the repulsive behaviors.
