Recruiting

Brent says you all must visit this website. I think we should also notify the Republican party.

There are some goodies at the site's CafePress store—this light switch cover is spiffy. I'd like having these all over my house…but then I saw the price, and then I wondered whether it would be worth it to have any Christian visitors peeing all over my bathroom floor, and then I decided, naaaah, not a good idea.

I'm sure tempted to buy their
2 Kings 2:24 bear. That's always struck me
as one of the most monumentally stupid bits
of the Bible.

Good thing I am already an athiest... otherwise, I would be very unsettled right now.

The deed is done. It's worth noting, too, that I saw this on their FAQ page:

Now that I'm a declared atheist, do I have to believe in the theory of evolution?

If the theory of evolution makes sense to you, then great. If not, fine. Read some books. Make up your own mind.

I'm not sure I like their answer all that much. They seem to be rejecting the creationist assumption that atheism and evolution are necessarily connected, and I certainly agree with that, and it's certainly true that no one is trying to compel anyone to "believe in" evolution. Still, it might not have hurt to point out that the validity of a scientific theory like evolution is not entirely a matter of individual opinion.

Great site. But why are the sponsored links trying to counterrecruit?

#43625: — 10/12  at  11:56 AM
I'm sure that the US Library of Congress will be very interested to know that a random internet using Dane is an Atheist. My mother should know I am one, or she hasn't paid attention.

#43627: — 10/12  at  11:59 AM
Are there google ads? Those are triggered by whatever words that are in the website. I know The American Street dropped Google Ads becuase there was no control over what ads showed up (there was an ad for Scientology which lead me to debate the issue with Kevin).

I block google ads in my browser, so I don't see them any more.

Nooooooooo.....

#43632: — 10/12  at  12:13 PM
Now my mom's gonna find out for sure.

I think the statement about evolution is excellent. Atheism should not dictate your position on scientific issues, and neither should religion. You should go read the evidence, and not make a decision because of an irrelevant and obvious conclusion about a mythical superhero.

Atheism is a troubling manifestation of god's will. As is evolution too.

Or is it that "god" is a troubling manifestation of atheistic evolution? I always forget which way it goes.

a modest experiment

My personal favorite verse is still Matt 5:5-6. Hard to beat. I'd make up a banner and wave it at football games if the local team were good enough to rate being televised.

#43645: — 10/12  at  01:00 PM
Oh great! Now I have to think for MYSELF? Crap. Thinkin's hard work!

#43647: — 10/12  at  01:33 PM
Eep! Being a more or less lifelong atheist of agnostic parents, I'd never read 2Kings 2:24 before. PZ, do you still have that Bible? If I send you a 2 liter bottle of Cherry Coke will you promise to use the results of drinking it to piss on said Bible? Preferably open to the above verse. If the good guys in the Bible go around getting bears to eat children for making fun of their hair*, what do the bad guys do?

*And what's with this guy that he's so wimpy that he has to drag a couple of bears into his crime of infanticide? Couldn't he at least have offed the innocent if obnoxious youngsters himself instead of corrupting innocent wildlife?

Now it's official! I can sleep better tonight!

#43649: — 10/12  at  01:47 PM
Regarding 2 Kings 2:24, this is just the story that Elisha told the authorities after the 42 mauled youths were discovered. At first Elisha insisted that he'd been in Samaria all along and had not walked to Bethel.

Haha, that site's hilarious.

#43654: — 10/12  at  02:35 PM
Thanks for the express ticket to hell, PZ. That's just great. I knew the atheists were up to no good. Telling my mom? That's just despicable.

#43658: — 10/12  at  03:30 PM
Yeesh, drag us down with you, PZ. Wreck my plausible deniability, why don't you...

I'm sticking with psalms 137:9

"How happy will be the one who grabs your babies
and smashes them on a rock!"

It's funny because it's true.

#43665: — 10/12  at  04:19 PM
As a matter of balance, here's a slightly cheaper light switch cover that expresses a related but contrasting point of view.

This site was in last Friday's Randi commentary, with some observations by the website owner:

But your light switches are upside down!

Euan: "But your light switches are upside down!"

Hmmm, he's right. In the UK, the switch goes up for off and down for on, the opposite of the US/Canada. You learn something new every day.
